About Me
I am Sowmya Lakshmi, a social gerontology practitioner with over two decades of dedicated service in elder care, advocacy, and community engagement. My journey has been shaped by a singular mission: to reshape how society perceives ageing and caregiving, and to ensure dignity, accountability, and compassion for elders and their families.
As the first professional to establish and practise social gerontology in the country, I have worked consistently to bridge the gap between policy, practice, and lived experience. My work blends hands-on caregiving, institutional innovation, and narrative-driven advocacy to position ageing as a recognised societal responsibility rather than a private family burden.
Central to my practice is the promotion of preventive and anticipatory care, helping elders and families make timely decisions that avoid needless hospitalisation and crisis-led interventions. I also work closely with families through death and bereavement, offering steady guidance and emotional handholding during end-of-life, loss, and the period that follows.

Thought Leadership
My work is grounded in the belief that ageing is not a private burden but a collective societal responsibility. Through seminars, writings, and public advocacy, I have consistently emphasised the need for accountable systems that honour elders while empowering caregivers.
By blending real-life narratives with comparative policy insights, I seek to humanise ageing and inspire reforms that make elder care accessible, dignified, and sustainable.
Legacy and Vision
Pioneer:
First professional to establish and practise social gerontology in the country.
Advocate:
Elevated elder care into public conversation, reframing it as a moral and social imperative.
Innovator:
Introduced coma care, assisted living, and adult foster care models long before they became part of mainstream discourse.
Graceful Ageing Pathway:
Developed the Graceful Ageing Pathway, a practical framework guiding elders and families through ageing transitions.
My vision is to continue building bridges between grassroots caregiving, policy reform, and narrative storytelling—ensuring that every elder has the right to age with dignity, and every caregiver receives recognition and support.
“ With over 20 years of experience, thousands of lives touched, and pioneering contributions to elder care systems in India, I remain deeply committed to advancing social gerontology as both a discipline and a movement. My independent practice is not merely about service delivery; it is about shaping a future where ageing is approached with respect, compassion, foresight, and accountability. The following pages offer a more detailed account of how I practise social gerontology in real-world settings—across caregiving, systems, families, and lived experience. ”
